Bali is cool. Greener than Java, not as crowded as Java and is the only Hindu Island in Indonesia. It means that girls don't wear hijab, there are plenty of shrines in all sizes in every corner.  Then these Hindu style sculptures, carvings are everywhere.
That time we were there it was the days of Kuningan holy days, I can't tell what is that about, but there were burning incense in all yards and food offered to gods in tiny leaf-bowls, tall decorated bamboo-poles in front of all houses; these made the atmosphere.
Only the South-Eastern tip of the island is overwhelmed by Western tourists. (The city of Kuta especially.) But even there by walking away 5 minutes from the busiest places one can find local spirit. I was explained though, the waves there are so excellent in all sizes, its truly a surfers heaven, including beginners.

This is everywhere
We were taken to a "trekking" in rice fields and vegetable gardens in the "mountains".
