Toraja

on the way to mountains

No photo can depict Toraja. A picturesque isolated mountain and  rice terrace-region, with unique language, culture and beliefs, strange cult of death and funerals, and overhanging roofs over doors. Quite a popular tourist destination, but not annoyingly. I rented a scooter for 2 days and rambled all around on the terrible roads until I crashed. 

Buffaloes, the indicators of wealth




















The dead can take belongings to afterlife, so they buried them with all sort of valuables. As these rich graves attracted the thieves, the caves were burial carved into unaccessible cliffs. Guarding figures were made and placed all around these caves...
